A capability model represents a set of capabilities defined and organized in a way, making easier to understand, assess, plan and monitor capabilities. CAMP includes a data model to define and organize any capability, and associated functionality to import/export and maintain the model.
The following diagram describes the two sides of the capability model.
The following two sections describe:
To import and export capability models in Excel spreadsheets, you need access to Utility page under Administration. To create or update the model on-line, you need edit access to Capability Model page under Portfolio menu.
If you don't see the above menu option, ask your administrator to add appropriate role to your account or add the above menu items to your current role.
Just like a project with work breakdown structures (WBS), an assembly with bill of material (BOM) or process with collection of activities and tasks, a capability is also defined as a collection of capability building blocks (CBBs). These capability building blocks are grouped into categories. Each capability building block is characterized along a maturity curve. Depending upon the scope, a capability building block may have one or more questions to assess the maturity. These questions can also be thought of as further breakdown of capability building blocks into set of questions.
In addition to describing the characteristics using CBBs along a maturity curve, the capability definition may also include implementation practices for achieving the desired level of maturity, and KPIs or metrics to measure and monitor performance and contribution of a capability.
The following components in the CAMP data model are used to define a capability.
<100% 20% 50% 30%> | ||
Entity | Description | Attributes |
---|---|---|
Capability Set | A self-contained capability with an identified customer and a defined outcome. It is the lowest level of management communication and control. It is made up of a set of capability building blocks grouped into one or more capability classes. | Category to classify capability sets e.g. business vs. IT capabilities |
Capability Class | A group of “related” capability building blocks as an organizing unit | Weight to calculate weighted average of the overall maturity score |
Capability | A capability building block (CBB). A capability set must have at least one capability class and one capability. | Weight to calculate weighted average of the maturity score at the capability class level. Question to ask when assessing at the capability level. Helptip |
Capability Question | (optional) Breaking down a capability (a.k.a. CBB) into one or more questions to allow detailed assessment | helptip |
Capability Maturity Level | Describes the capability or capability question at each level of the maturity | Short Description, Description (long), Helptip |
The following components are OPTIONAL but recommended to enhance the body of knowledge about a capability. The additional information about the capability can help in identifying areas of improvements, identifying dependencies, quantifying value, monitoring performance and developing roadmaps.
<100% 20% 50% 30%> | ||
Component | Description | Attributes |
---|---|---|
Capability Practice | Enabling or Implementation practices at a maturity level to achieve a desired capability. A practice is defined at capability or capability question level. The practice can be anything - people skills, process, technology solution, etc. The practices Each practice can also include associated outcome and metrics. | Practice Name Class to specify practice type e.g. people, process, technology etc. |
Capability Dependency | Input and output dependencies with other capabilities. The dependency can be defined at capability set, capability class, capability (CBB) or capability maturity level. Dependencies defined at a maturity level are used to identify gaps in supporting capabilities. | Comments to describe the dependency - what is provided or consumed between the two parties. |
Value Dial and Measure | Measures (KPIs/Metrics) associated with the capability set. The measures can be used to monitor both capability performance and its impact. Capability Maturity Levels are defined as a maturity measure. | Class/Subclass to classify value dials and measures. Unit of Measure, Trend Direction |
General Question | A set of free-form text questions which can be included as part of capability assessment. | Sequence to order the display of questions. |
Document | Documents stored in CAMP or external links to another repository, providing access to reference information, templates or samples. | Category to classify documents and links |
The above information about a capability set can be added or updated in any order.
Both, batch (file-based) and on-line methods are available to create or update the information about a capability. All aspects of a capability can be exported and imported using Excel spreadsheet template. If a record already exists, it is updated.
The model relies upon certain reference data to appropriately classify, organize and leverage capability models. The default implementation includes basic setup of reference data. System Administrator can either use alias names for system-defined values or extend reference information with organization-specific items.
CAMP currently uses a table-like structure to export and upload a capability model data. The template using fully qualifying names for reference fields and other attributes.
To download the template or current data, go to UTILITIES under Administration menu. Select “Capability Framework Models” under Export Data. The next panel of information gives you option to select one or more capability sets. Once you select at least one capability set, you will see the list of data you can export. Select all or the area you are interested in. Each item selected is a worksheet in the downloaded spreadsheet.
Add or edit records in the spreadsheet. Each worksheet is labels with system default name. You can name a copy or rename worksheet labels.
If you change an attribute which is part of a primary key e.g. name, it will create a new record with that name. You can make an existing record inactive by setting IsActive column to true. Inactive records are not included in the assessments or analysis. Use the on-line maintenance page to permanently delete the record.
If you want to use simple average when calculating maturity score, do not enter weights. For weighted average, enter appropriate weight between zero (0) and 100. System does not compute or check if the total weight across all items is 100. It is up to you to assign appropriate weight to each item.
To upload the data, go to UTILITIES under Administration menu. Select “Capability Framework Models” under Import Data. The next panel of will ask for the file name with the data you want to upload. Once the file is uploaded in the system, the next panel will show the list of data items you want to process. The worksheets with the system default names for automatically selected. If you have renamed the worksheet or want to use another worksheet, pick the worksheet from the drop-down list.
Upon successful processing, the system will produce an on-line report of number of records added or updated. If an error was encountered, the processing will stop and it will display the error message with the line number in the worksheet where problem was encountered. Most likely, either the reference data does not exist either due to typing error or reference record was not created. Once you fix the error, upload the file again and process it.
Create or maintain data using on-line forms.
Select PORTFOLIO menu to create or update

To manage, navigate, communicate, report or focus, we like to organize items into an hierarchy. Moreover, different stakeholders may want to view them differently thus requiring multiple hierarchies.
CAMP provides a simple, consistent yet flexible ways to organize capabilities into one or more hierarchies.
There are three parts or levels to an hierarchy.
A capability set may be associated with multiple clusters. In other words, same capability set can appear in multiple collections.
Both, batch (file-based) and on-line methods are available to create or update collections, domains and clusters. A complete hierarchy can be exported and imported using Excel spreadsheet template.
To download the template or current data, go to UTILITIES under Administration menu. Select “Organization Reference Information” under Export Data. If you happen to have access to more than one organization, next panel displays the list of organizations. Select an organization. Then select collections, domains and clusters to download.
Add or edit records in the spreadsheet. Each worksheet is labels with system default name. You can name a copy or rename worksheet labels.
If you change an attribute which is part of a primary key e.g. name, it will create a new record with that name. You can make an existing record inactive by setting IsActive column to true. Inactive records are not included in the display or navigation of the hierarchy. Use the on-line maintenance page to permanently delete the record.
To upload the data, go to UTILITIES under Administration menu. Select “Organization Reference Information” under Import Data.
To create or update data using on-line forms, select Reference choice from Administration menu.
Use Collection, Domain and Cluster pages in the order to create hierarchy levels.
Use the default values for Entity Class and Subclass. Choose a color to used to for the background in heatmaps or wherever the hierarchy is used in data visualization. Set the default to true for the collection to be the default hierarchy in data visualization.
Once the collection, domain and cluster are defined, the capability sets can be linked to one or more clusters. You can use file-based import/export or on-line forms to add or edit clustering of capability sets.
Use the same method described about to import/export capability data. Select the cluster capability set option in import or export page to download or upload data.
Follow the same method for maintaining capability sets. Select Collection from the second panel to add or edit cluster membership.
